Community members can now apply to join a Hume City Council group that will help guide how it communicates with its diverse community groups and residents.

Council’s new ‘Multicultural Communications Advisory Group’ will work closely with us to guide on how to effectively speak with our many varied community groups and will consider cultural preferences and sensitivities.

The Multicultural Communications Advisory Group will be made up of 11 members, one from each of the language communities that will most benefit from communications support.

This includes Arabic, Assyrian, Farsi, Greek, Italian, Mandarin, Nepali, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

Hume City Council is now seeking Expressions of Interest from locals to join the Multicultural Communications Advisory Group, with applications open until Friday 24 November 2023.

Locals from the above-mentioned groups that speak and read the language fluently will be considered, with an annual fee paid to those who participate.

The initiative will allow representatives from a number of backgrounds to advocate for the needs and wants of their peers, ensuring they have the same access to information and Council services, programs and events.

The initiative supports Hume City Council’s commitment to ensuring all members of our community have the same access to information, as well as services, programs and events.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Joseph Haweil:

“We have a responsibility as a Council to ensure every decision we make is made on behalf of our community.

“We have developed the Multicultural Communications Advisory Group to ensure every community voice is heard, and that we do that with respect and a willingness to listen and adjust to meet the varied needs of Hume.

“I urge anyone who feels their language has been a barrier to accessing vital Council services to join our team and be a voice for your community.”
