Join us for the exhibition launch on Saturday 20 August at 11.30am on Grundy St, Westmeadows in front of the Mother Nature mural.

Here We Walk is an artist-led community project that celebrates our shared waterways and urban green spaces through photography. The exhibition explores the solace and joy the natural environment offers, particularly in the wake of Melbourne’s extended lockdowns. It invites audiences to experience art in new ways.

The exhibition was developed over a two-day collaborative workshop that explored connection to place and the natural world through reflective, creative processes and play. Participants were invited to explore and wander through the beautiful surrounds of Moonee Ponds Creek, then through various prompts they responded to the site using found and repurposed materials. Working as a group, participants co-created photographic images featuring themselves as human-animals within the local landscape.

Here We Walk is a co-creation process between community members and artist-led collective, Melinda Hetzel & Co. with the resulting exhibition of striking, colour photographs displayed as a pavement-gallery on the footpaths of nearby Westmeadows Village.

Melinda Hetzel & Co are known for creating deeply evocative, visually stunning, arts experiences in public space. Collaboration and meaningful audience connection are at the heart of our work. Based in Naarm (Melbourne), we pursue a fascination with how the arts can affirm threads of interconnectedness between human beings and the rapidly changing world in which we live.

Pia Johnson, is a photographer and visual artist, whose work has been exhibited across Australia and internationally; and is collected in private and public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria.
