Today we acknowledge the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a time to promote inclusion and respect in which Hume City for all who live, work and visit our community.
This year’s theme, ‘Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future’, highlights the vital contributions and voices of people with a disability.
This includes people who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory differences that prevent them from equal participation in places that are not accessible to them.
In Hume City:
Nearly 7 per cent of people require assistance with daily tasks due to a long-term health condition, disability, or old age – the third highest for a community in Greater Melbourne.
These statistics remind us of the importance of empowering leadership among people with disabilities to create a more inclusive community.
Hume City Council is proud to support initiatives that create an accessible and inclusive environment, including:
SEED Initiative: Award-winning program providing equitable access to local job opportunities.
Local Jobs for Local People: One-on-one support connecting job seekers facing barriers with employers.
Accessible Recreation Venues: Disability-friendly facilities with tailored modifications.
Advanced Audio Loop Systems: Available at Community Centres and Hume Global Learning Centres for enhanced access.
Inclusive Library Services: Featuring Auslan Storytime, home delivery, and a wide range of inclusive resources.
