Hume City Council has announced a $1 million investment in upgrades to the Eric Boardman Memorial Reserve athletics track in Sunbury with an additional $2 million in funding from the Victorian Government.

The grass athletics track at the reserve is currently unusable during the wet weather season and requires redevelopment to be fully functional all year round.

Mayor Joseph Haweil gave thanks for the Victorian Government’s contribution and said redeveloping the existing grass athletics track into a synthetic track which allow for training and competitions all year round for the Sunbury Little Athletics Club.

“Not only are synthetic tracks durable and almost impervious to weather, I’m told that runners and athletes love them because it allows for good shock absorption and more comfortable running without affecting their speed,” Cr Haweil said.

“This all-weather quality makes training and competition more consistent, allowing athletes to pursue uninterrupted training all year round.”

“I am very proud that Council is supporting the local sporting community to thrive and I look forward to seeing this wonderful project take shape for the Sunbury community.”

Member for Sunbury Josh Bull MP deemed the upgrade as essential as part of government’s commitment to sport and active recreation.

“Better sport and recreation facilities make it easier for Victorians to get back to local sport and recreation and lead healthy and active lifestyles,” said Josh Bull MP.

In addition to a track upgrade, Council is supporting upgrades to other areas of the reserve as part of a $3 million investment, including pavilions, social rooms, change rooms, kitchen facilities, lighting and car parking.
