Council calls on community to get vaccinated

Hume City Council is encouraging eligible residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine as part of a new campaign to help the state move away from the need for ongoing lockdowns.
Mayor of Hume City, Joseph Haweil said he hopes the stories shared throughout the campaign on radio, print and digital platforms will encourage more people to get vaccinated.
“Ultimately, we want more people to have the discussion with their doctor and look to reliable sources of information about the vaccine,” Cr Haweil said.
“This campaign will feature vaccinated people from the community who have gone through the same thought process about whether to get the vaccine. They will share what helped them make their decision so that their fellow community members can make the best choice for themselves.”
Council has set up an information hub on the website to provide facts about the vaccine and links to credible sources such as the Victorian Government’s website.
“The information hub will also feature conversation starters to help people talk to their loved one about the vaccine and their options, and provide information about current restrictions and how they impact Council services and facilities.”
Councillor Haweil acknowledges that there needs to be a large increase in take up of the vaccine to put an end to lockdowns.
“I can understand why some people have their reservations about a new vaccine, but medical advice is the risks of severe reactions or complications are low – lower than the risk of many other prescription medications that many take without question.
“The best minds in medicine have from around the world have come together to develop this vaccine.
“We’re now in the middle of lockdown six – something I never thought I’d see 12 months ago. With every lockdown, people lose hope as plans are further put on hold. The vaccine is our one hope of a COVID-normal life, where some restrictions exist but lockdowns are a thing of the past.
“I have one message for our community: we all have a part to play to protect ourselves and our community. Please choose to get vaccinated.”
The Hume campaign will begin on Thursday, with messages from community members added across the city over the next four weeks.
