Hume Council’s commitment to recovery and reactivation
Published on 14 February 2021
Hume City Council has responded to the impacts of COVID-19 with a strategic COVID-19 Recovery and Reactivation Plan.
The plan has a focus on the next 12 months with the aim of supporting the community to reconnect, aiding in social recovery, and accelerating economic recovery of businesses, employment, and local investment.
COVID-19 has significantly impacted individuals, families, community groups and businesses in the City of Hume. The Hume community recorded 1,660 COVID-19 cases from March to November 2020, with a peak of 585 cases in August.
Mayor of Hume City, Councillor Joseph Haweil said, Council has an important role in continuing to support the community through the coronavirus and the recovery beyond.
“There have been crippling effects on our local economy with many residents being either stood down or losing their jobs, and some businesses have had to close their doors permanently.”
“Our COVID-19 Recovery and Reactivation Plan will support our community’s recovery through responding to local needs and opportunities.”
“2020 was a year like no other and while the effects of COVID-19 are still with us, we can continue to build a better future for Hume.”
Some of the key initiatives in the COVID-19 Recovery and Reactivation Plan include:
- Extend waiver of interest on outstanding rates balances until 30 June 2021;
- Extended time to pay Council infringements until 30 June 2021;
- Promote local and regional visitation, activation to support hospitality and accommodation recovery/growth;
- Deliver in person and online mental health, mindfulness, and resilience workshops (delivered in community languages) to women and multicultural communities;
- Plan and deliver a COVID-19 mass immunisation program for Hume City residents when a vaccine becomes available;
- Grants of up to $5,000 to support sporting clubs to remain viable and operating post-COVID; and
- Continue to expand opportunities for older residents to remain connected online and with the assistance of technology in the home.
