Hume City Council has further cemented itself as a leader in creating a Circular Economy, hosting the Buy Recycled Northern Councils Showcase on Thursday 13 June.

The event at Town Hall Broadmeadows, held in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, was an opportunity for Council to show how it is supporting local industries to reuse and recycle materials for a more sustainable future.

Attended by more than 50 local council officers from outside of Hume, it featured innovative ways recycled products have been used in local government infrastructure projects and landscaping, new research and changes in how they now approach procurement.

The Showcase included a mini tradeshow featuring recycled product suppliers from across the region, and two bus tours to visit sites featuring suppliers and application of recycled products in material and organics.

Hume’s Circular Economy is predicted to add $903 million to our city’s Gross Regional Product and create 1,500 jobs per year in Hume by 2040.

We are achieving these outcomes through the “Towards Hume as a Circular City” program, which began in 2021, and helps guide Hume’s heavily industrialised businesses to reuse and recycle.

The program aligns with Council’s Climate Change Action Plan 2023 – 2028, which aims to make Council operations carbon neutral by 2030 though the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from Council activities.

Quotes attributable to Hume City Mayor Cr. Naim Kurt:
