Learn more about your green bin
The delivery stage of the green bin roll-out is now complete! We’ve delivered over 42,000 bins over the past few months. Every household in Hume City should now have a food and garden bin.
The purpose of the green bin is to help remove food and garden waste from landfill. By weight, food makes up half of red bin contents. In landfills, organic material breaks down and creates harmful greenhouse gases like methane that contribute to climate change. However, everything in the green bin goes to a local facility to be recycled into compost!
You can put any kind of food in the green bin, including:
- meat and bones
- cheeses
- eggshells
- desserts or lollies
- processed foods
Make sure you remove any packaging! Packaging goes in the red bin. You can’t put things like plastic (including bin liners), tea bags, pet poo, kitty litter, rocks, soil or timber into your green bin.
