The Hume Youth Action Committee (YAC) is funded through the Victorian Government Engage! Funding and facilitated by Hume City Council Youth Services.

The Hume YAC consists of twelve aspiring young community leaders, ranging in age from 15-20 years from a diverse range of backgrounds.

The YAC leaders work together to identify issues facing young people in Hume through community consultation, co-designing and facilitating activities to improve the outcomes for young people.

The Hume YAC is a youth led initiative, with young people receive support and guidance from the Hume Youth Services Team. The Hume Youth Services team will assist the YAC leaders to:

  • gain a greater connection to and actively participate in their local community.
  • build their skills and knowledge, and pathways to employment, training and education.
  • improve their health and wellbeing and social connections to friends, family and the community.

Mind Matters - Youth Mental Health Action Summit

In October 2023, the Hume Youth Action Committee enlisted the support of La Trobe University Innovation and Entrepreneurship to host a mental health summit for the young people of Hume.

Groups of young people from across Hume came together to discuss mental health challenges and develop meaningful, youth led mental health initiatives for their communities.

Learning how to develop an initiative and then pitch it to a room full of peers was just a part of what the summit had to offer. Keynote speakers, activities, and group discussions made the day full of exciting opportunities for learning, sharing and growth.

With ongoing support from La Trobe University, the most compelling group (which focused on mental health education and neurodiversity) will have the opportunity to develop their idea further.

The Youth Action Committee were involved from the very beginning, taking important roles planning every facet of the event.YAC Mental Health Summit photo 2.png

ACTION! Films

The Hume YAC have conducted close to 400 consultations in which identified mental health and bullying as a few of the key areas of concern for young people in Hume. A goal of the Hume YAC was to not only create awareness but inspire change, which led to the production of two short films ‘Mental Health Bar’ and ‘Say Good-bye to Standing By’. The Hume YAC wanted to highlight how dynamic mental health can be and hoped to capture mental health itself rather than mental illness. The Hume YAC wanted to bring your attention to how seeking support can really help when life gets overwhelming.
