Young people’s stories of heritage and diversity: Hume Anthology 2024
The Hume Youth Anthology is an annual published collection of creative works from young people in Hume City.
Every year, young people ages 6 to 24 are invited to submit a drawing, poem, short story, comic or photograph reflecting a shared theme. The Anthology was inspired by the voices of Hume’s young people, and it is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate their creative talents.
The 2024 Hume Youth Anthology was a wonderful showcase of young creativity, highlighting the diverse experiences and stories of the Hume community. It brought together 71 submissions from young people, all focused on the theme of Heritage and Diversity. The works cover a range of formats, including stories, poems, and art, providing insight into the unique perspectives of young individuals in the region.
Submissions were divided into three age categories:
- Prep to Grade 6 (Ages 6-11)
- Year 7 to 12 (Ages 12-18)
- Ages 19-24
The community had the opportunity to vote for their favorite pieces, and several awards were presented based on their creativity and impact. These awards included:
- Best creative piece (6–11 year-olds): Ala’a Alsowaidi
- Best creative piece (12–18 year-olds): Azelya Cairn
- Best creative piece (19–24 year-olds): Jana Tawil
- Community Favourite (all ages): Maria Mouhtadi
- Mayor’s Choice Award: Zyle Nolan Tacoloy
The Mayor’s Choice Award recipient, Zyle Nolan Tacoloy, had their piece featured as the front cover of the printed Anthology. Additionally, all award winners received a $250 art voucher to support their artistic development.
The works from the Anthology are currently on display in a 3-month installation at the Gee-Lee Wik Doleen Gallery at the Hume Global Learning Centre in Craigieburn, as well as being included in the printed publication. This event is a great opportunity to celebrate and support the creative talents of young people in the community.
