Pride In the North: Celebrating our diverse community

Pride in the North presents an exhibition of artworks drawn from Hume’s diverse LGBTIQA+ community, showcasing artworks by Michelle Venne-Rowe alongside works made as part of self-expression workshops celebrating sexuality and gender identity for IDAHOBIT: The International Day Against LGBTIQA+ discrimination in 2022 and 2023. Contributors range in age from secondary school students to adults.

Hume City is one of Australia's fastest growing and diverse communities. It is home to people who are descended from the original inhabitants, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, as well as those who have come here to live from around the world. Hume is also home to a significant number of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer and asexual, collectively referred to as the LGBTIQA+ community.

The diversity of the community is one of our strengths and greatest assets. However, LGBTIQA+ people in Hume have not always felt safe, or visible in their communities. Creating artwork that reflects their experience is a way that unrepresented people can have a voice. This exhibition demonstrates the diversity of the LGBTIQA+ community in terms of their backgrounds, interests and experiences, and celebrates how creativity can provide a way of taking up space in a world that doesn’t always acknowledge they exist.

The exhibition coincides with the 2024 IDAHOBIT Day on May 17.

This exhibition would not have been possible without the support of Pride in the North: a collaborative network of service providers committed to building a safe and inclusive community in Melbourne’s North.
