Since 15th century, Indonesian Makassan sailors from the island of Sulawesi traded with First Nations Yolŋu people from Yirrkala, Northern Australia to harvest the exotic sea delicacy, trepang (sea cucumber). The relationship established via these trade routes had strong reciprocal cultural influences on both the Yolŋu and Sulawesi’s art, rituals, language and society.

To celebrate this enduring relationship, Hume City Council in conjunction with SalamFest 2023 host a special exhibition showcasing the works of Yolŋu and Makassan artists, highlighting their shared history and culture predating colonisation.

Featuring pandanus weavings, bark paintings and yidaki (didgeridoos) from Yirkala and hand-woven palm fibre works and earthenware of Indonesia, these cultural objects are presented with immersive soundscapes and audio-visual installations, merging traditional and contemporary cultural practices of the two nations, inspiring new creative encounters.

Stay tuned for more event announcements.

Notes:

Barrak (in Yolŋu language) and Warak (in Makassar language) means Northern Wind. Dhimmurru (in Yolŋu's) and Timborok (in Makassar's) refers to the Southern wind.
