Hard waste collections

Please book your hard waste collection before putting items out.

Check the list of accepted items before booking. Only accepted items will be collected.

When to put your items out for collection:

• Place items out the weekend prior (no later than 6am Monday) to your collection week.
• Refer to your booking confirmation for your collection week.

Where to place your items:

• Keep items on your front lawn, driveway, or an alternate Council-approved location.
• Keep items within 2 metres of your property boundary or fence.
• Ensure your waste can be collected safely:
• • Keep any gates open and/or provide driveway access. Gate openings need to be wide enough to safely carry items through.
  • Keep items away from buildings, fences or cars.
  • Place items neatly. Do not stack items above 1 metre (waist height) high.
• Only put items out that you want collected. Other items near hard waste or bundled branch piles may be taken by mistake and no compensation will be given.

If we are unable to safely access and remove your hard waste items, your collection may not take place. If this happens, we will leave a note and you will need to move the items and re-book your collection.

When you make a booking, you will be asked how much waste you are putting out for collection.

You can choose from the following collection sizes. The size of your collection will determine how many waste vouchers are used.

• 2 cubic metres (1 waste voucher). Items must fit with a 2m (length) x 1m (width) x 1m (height) area.
• 4 cubic metres (2 waste vouchers). Items must fit with a 4m (length) x 1m (width) x 1m (height) area.
• 6 cubic metres (3 waste vouchers). Items must fit with a 6m (length) x 1m (width) x 1m (height) area.

Example collection size area:

The following items are accepted for hard waste collection:

• Mattresses and bed bases
• Household furniture and toys
• Electronic items (remove batteries and dispose of them safely at a battery recycling station)
• Whitegoods such as fridges (remove doors), dishwashers, washing machines
• Air conditioners and hot water units
• Car and 4WD tyres (rims must be separated)
• Computers, televisions and electrical equipment
• Scrap metal, tools and equipment including car parts, lawn mowers, roof iron and guttering (no more than 1.5m long or 30kg each)
• Carpet (rolled and tied, cut in to bundles no more than 1.5m long and 30kg each)
• Pottery, ceramics and chinaware
• Sheet glass (no more than 1.5m long, securely wrapped in cardboard or bubble wrap and clearly labelled 'glass'. Glass tabletops must be removed from their frame and wrapped)
• Metal tanks, drums and paint tins (must be open/unlidded, rinsed, empty) 
• Trash and treasure items
• Wood/timber and fencing (bundled, no more than 1.5m long and 1m wide. Bundles must be suitable for one person to lift above shoulder height. No tree branches – book a separate bundled branch collection)

The following items are not accepted for hard waste collection:

• Items or bundles weighing more than 30kg each (excluding household appliances)
• Items or bundles 1.5m or longer
• Building materials (including bricks, concrete, excavation material, plaster, dirt or stones)
• Commercial or industrial trade wastes
• Batteries
• Household garbage
• Household recyclable goods
• Hazardous and/or offensive wastes (including asbestos)
• Car engines
• Truck and tractor tyres
• Unwrapped sheet glass
• Garden waste (drop off for free at Hume Clean Days) or tree branches (book a bundled branch collection)
• Timber pallets
• Clothes and shoes
• Water tanks

Hard waste collections can only be booked using available waste vouchers. The waste vouchers: general conditions apply in addition to the following:

• A maximum of three vouchers (up to 6 cubic metres of waste) can be used at once.
• Bookings must be made at a Hume residential address with Council’s appointed contractor.
• A collection must be booked prior to putting accepted items out for collection.
• Items must be kept on the front lawn, driveway, or other Council-approved location for collection.
• Items must be placed in accordance to preparing for your collection.
• Only accepted items will be collected. You are responsible for removing and correctly disposing of any uncollected items within 24 hours.
• Items placed on the nature strip without approval may incur fines.
• Tree branches will not be collected unless a branch booking has also been made.
• Additional waste above your booking size may not be collected. If it is, the number of vouchers redeemed against your property may be adjusted and will be equivalent to the total waste collected.
• Uncollected items must be returned to your property within 24 hours and correctly dispose of using alternate disposal methods

Waste Vouchers: General Conditions

• Waste vouchers are available to Hume residents and residential ratepayers.
• Vouchers are automatically allocated each year between 1 July and 30 June. No physical vouchers are provided.
• Vouchers can be used to book hard waste collections, bundled branch collections and/or to take waste to our Resource Recovery Centres for free.
• Each voucher allows up to 2 cubic metres of accepted waste to be disposed of. This provides a total of 10 cubic metres of waste that can be disposed of for free each year.
• Vouchers cannot be transferred or redeemed for cash.
• Unused vouchers as at 11.59pm 30 June each year will not be accumulated into the following financial year.

Donation and recycling

If items are in good condition, consider one of the following options:

• Donate items to your local charity store or arrange for the charity to collect your items.
• Promote your unwanted items on social networking sites such as BuySwapSell or on your Facebook page
• Sell item(s) online through sites such as eBay and Gumtree or advertise in the local paper.
• Post your items on a reuse website such as Freecycle.
• Hold a garage sale.

Enable Australia offers a free drop off service for e-waste in Broadmeadows. The following items can be dropped off free of charge:

• Computers
• Laptops
• LCD monitors
• Printers
• Keyboards, mice and cables
• Server and networking equipment
• Phones

Diabetes Australia can pick up unwanted clothing, household linen, books, homewares and small kitchen items in good condition. Items will be made available for resale in Savers Stores, with proceeds funding Diabetes Australia's health and welfare programs.
